Since its inception, the club has accounted for many top cyclists, such as the late Arthur Metcalfe, Tour of Britain Winner in 1964, British Best All Rounder and National Road Race Champion in 1965 and Tour de France rider in 1967 and 1968.
The late Peter Gannon was National Hill Climb Champion in 1968. Jack Macklam was West Yorkshire Road Race Champion in 1959 and 1963, Yorkshire Best All Rounder in 1961 and Tour of Britain rider in the sixties, whilst Richard Simpson was West Yorkshire Road Race Champion in 1966 and also rode the Tour of Britain four times in the sixties.
In the eighties, David Stevens, Phil Bateman and Russell Hepton all represented the club at home and abroad. In the late eighties, Nick Simpson represented Great Britain at the Junior World Track Championships and not to be outdone our lady members Corinne Stevens and Catherine Simpson also raced abroad for Great Britain in the early nineties.
Today, the tradition continues with Luke Simpson, youngest son of Richard, being the reigning under 14 Yorkshire Criterium Champion. |
